In my two-decade long career in the fitness industry, I, Stefan Ianev, have witnessed the transformative power of personal training firsthand. As a personal trainer, a coach, and an educator, I’ve been privileged to help hundreds of clients transform their bodies and, by extension, their lives. Yet, the journey towards facilitating long-lasting change is a continuous one. It was on this path that I recognized a significant need for a paradigm shift: a transition from rapid to sustainable weight loss.
Like many personal trainers starting their career, I initially specialized in rapid body transformations. The short-term results were often spectacular, leaving clients ecstatic, and their before-and-after pictures made for impressive advertisements. This process, as exhilarating as it was to participate in, started revealing a worrying trend over time.

A significant number of clients who had achieved dramatic weight loss were struggling to maintain their new physiques. This observation isn’t isolated, but rather it echoes an extensive body of research suggesting that only around 5% of people can maintain their weight loss over the long term. This realization marked a turning point in my career – the high-speed approach was overlooking an essential component: sustainability.
The problem with rapid weight loss programs is they often demand drastic, unsustainable lifestyle changes. The diets can be incredibly restrictive, and the workout regimens intensely demanding. Although these can generate quick results, they tend to be impractical for many clients to integrate into their day-to-day lives over the long term.

Recognizing this pattern, I decided to pivot my focus towards sustainable weight loss. My goal transformed to not just help clients lose weight, but to do so at a pace that made the journey enjoyable rather than a constant battle. This new approach emphasized gradual changes that could be seamlessly incorporated into a person’s lifestyle, increasing the likelihood of long-term adherence.
Over the past few years, this strategy has proven transformative. Clients are happier, less stressed about their fitness journey, and most importantly, they’re maintaining their weight loss.
This shift in approach underscores the importance of adaptability in personal training. As fitness professionals, our strategies must evolve with the needs of our clients. As I’ve learned, sometimes slower is indeed faster. And in the quest for sustainable weight loss, a paced, balanced, and integrated approach appears to be the key to unlocking lasting success.
